East Coast Swimming Championships Awarded to Charlottetown

Swimming PEI President, Barney Bree; Charlottetown Mayor, Clifford Lee; and Tourism Charlottetown President, Kevin Murphy announced today that the 2008 & 2009 East Coast Short Course Swimming Championships will be hosted in Charlottetown at the CARI Complex.

The Championships will bring together 400 of the best swimmers in Eastern Canada and potentially the United States.  The competition was developed in 1980 to have a designated swim meet for the top age group swimmers in the region.  On March 8, 2007, Swim Nova Scotia, Swim New Brunswick, and Swim Newfoundland signed-off on an agreement awarding Swimming PEI hosting rights to the event until 2009.  The 2007 Championship was also held in Charlottetown.

“Swimming Prince Edward Island is delighted to have been selected to host the East Coast Short Course Championships for the next two years,” said Swimming PEI President, Barney Bree. “This is the culmination of the efforts of a lot of dedicated volunteers who came together to host the Championships in 2007 following a trial run in 2006. The success of the event in March of 2007 has confirmed to our partners in the other Atlantic Provinces that Prince Edward Island is now a major player in Canadian swimming.”

“We are delighted to host this great event,” said Mayor Clifford Lee.  “It is a wonderful opportunity to extend our warm hospitality, promote the sport, and display the talent of some of the best swimmers in the region.  The attraction of major sporting events such as the Championships is supported by the efforts of the SCORE! initiative, an important partnership between the City of Charlottetown and Tourism Charlottetown, established to enable Charlottetown to further capitalize on the billion dollar sport tourism industry,” noted Mayor Lee.

“Tourism Charlottetown is very happy to work in partnership with the City of Charlottetown through SCORE! to provide the resources to secure Sporting Events for Charlottetown”, stated Kevin Murphy, President of Tourism Charlottetown. “Congratulations to Swimming PEI and their volunteers for bringing these Championships to Prince Edward Island.  Community-minded individuals, like Barney Bree and Sandi Lowther, make events happen in Charlottetown and the SCORE! team is here to provide the support required to make this event a success!”
