2010 Senior Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship to be Hosted in Charlottetown

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Mayor Clifford Lee, Tourism Charlottetown President, David MacKenzie and Softball Canada President, Kevin Quinn, announced that the 2010 Senior Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship will be hosted in Charlottetown, with the Charlottetown Fawcettes Senior Men’s Softball Club as the host team.

“Hosting a Canadian Championship event takes a tremendous amount of volunteer hours, strong leadership, and a considerable amount of sponsorship dollars.  It also takes the cooperation and support of several groups from within the public and private sector,” said Kevin Quinn. “Softball Canada is extremely pleased that the City of Charlottetown has taken the lead in supporting this event.  Tourism Charlottetown, under the leadership of David MacKenzie, is also working very closely with the City through the SCORE initiative to make this possible.  Softball Canada is very confident that the Host Committee will do an outstanding job of hosting this event,” noted Quinn.

As the largest and most sought after Softball Canada event in the country, this Championship will bring together 250 + participants, along with fans from across the nation for the week-long event.  Competition play will be held at the Central Field Complex from August 29th-September 5th.

“The success in securing the hosting-rights to the 2010 Senior Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship, once again demonstrates Charlottetown’s capacity to host prestigious sport events,” said Mayor Clifford Lee. “Hosting sporting events enhances tourism, economic development, investment in infrastructure, and provides an opportunity to showcase our great city.”

“Tourism Charlottetown, in partnership with the City of Charlottetown, welcomes these esteemed athletes to our City in 2010,” said David MacKenzie.  “Tourism Charlottetown recognizes Sport Tourism as a driving force of tourism growth in our city and we are pleased to support such bids through the SCORE program,” adds MacKenzie.

SCORE, with its partners, continually pursues opportunities for Charlottetown to host regional, national and international sporting events.  The City of Charlottetown and Tourism Charlottetown realize the value of the events sector and has placed high priority on sporting events to stimulate tourism, economic and community growth.

Background:

SCORE is a partnership of the City of Charlottetown and Tourism Charlottetown established to grow sport tourism business in Charlottetown.  The SCORE Team is comprised of industry professionals and is available to assist provincial sport bodies and event organizers in attracting and hosting regional, national and international sporting events and sport meetings.  Services include: preparation of bid proposals, assistance with bid presentations, funding assistance, marketing support, sales tools and welcome program for athletes.
