City of Charlottetown’s Events Development Officer Recipient of Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Award

Charlottetown, PE – Mayor Clifford Lee announce today that the City of Charlottetown’s Events Development Officer, Wayne Long, has been selected as the recipient of the Pacrim Hospitality Services Inc. Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Industry Builder of the Year Award. Wayne was also a top-three finalist for the 2006 and 2007 Industry Builder Award.

The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) Industry Builder Award recognizes the efforts of an individual who has significantly contributed to the continued development of sport tourism as a recognized and respected industry segment in Canada through policy development, programming, advocacy efforts and event attraction.

“Our city recognizes the valuable role sport serves in creating a balanced and economically stimulated community,” said Mayor Lee. “Wayne has positioned Charlottetown over the years as a premier sport tourism destination and has forged many strong partnerships locally and nationally. He is highly regarded amongst sport and tourism groups as a leader, growing the market and bringing millions of new dollars in economic impact to our community.”

Mayor Lee also stated, “The passion, commitment and leadership that Wayne brings to his position are to be commended. He has embodied leadership in the sport tourism industry since taking on the role of Events Development Officer, always striving to develop his knowledge and skills so he can share his expertise with others. He is truly passionate about ensuring that Charlottetown is front and center on the national scene and that our city is a viewed as a leading destination. It is important to recognize the accomplishments he has achieved and contribution to the sport tourism industry given the nature and size of our municipality.”

Wayne is the lead on the SCORE sport tourism initiative, a partnership between the City of Charlottetown and Tourism Charlottetown. SCORE is a brand that has been quickly recognized and highly respected at the national level resulting in great event attraction success for Charlottetown.

Awards will be presented at the third annual CSTA PRESTIGE Awards (Program Recognizing Exceptional Sport Tourism Initiatives, Games & Events) during a gala luncheon, as a part of the CSTA Sport Events Congress at the Hilton Lac Lemay, in Gatineau, Quebec on April 16th. Recognized in six categories, these awards acknowledge those that have made outstanding contributions to the success of Canada’s sport tourism industry.

The CSTA leverages its expertise and leadership as a catalyst to grow the $2.4 billion a year sport tourism industry in Canada, through the development of partnerships between sport events rights holders, host communities and other sport tourism stakeholders. Other activities of the CSTA include sharing best practices, measuring the economic impact of sport events and enhancing the profile of sport tourism, one of the fastest growing segments of the tourism industry in Canada.
