2019 Canadian Ringette Championships Bringing Elevated Prosperity to Charlottetown
Charlottetown, PE, April 11, 2019 – Charlottetown and Summerside are currently hosting the 2019 Canadian Ringette Championships, continuing through Saturday. The two municipalities jointly bid to host the prestigious event as part of their official event co-hosting partnership.
“Charlottetown is alive with activity and energy,” said Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown. “Hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets in the capital city are bustling, and thousands of ringette players, coaches, officials, Ringette Canada staff, and fans can be seen throughout Charlottetown. This nine-day, shoulder season event is a prime example of sport tourism at its core.”
Of the 45 teams participating in the 2019 Canadian Ringette Championships, 35 teams have set-up their home base at Charlottetown hotels, along with championship officials, Ringette Canada staff, and family and friends. As a result, a significant portion of the Championships’ estimated $5 million economic impact is being spent in the capital city.
Over a six-week period this spring, Charlottetown will have hosted five national and one regional sporting championships. Set to round out this very busy period is the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League National Championship taking place at UPEI’s Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre from April 26-28.
Charlottetown is the top ranked sport hosting destination in Canada for populations under 50,000, a position the destination has held since the introduction of the Global Sports Impact Canada Ranking in 2018. The city is currently ranked 6th overall in the country, sitting amongst large metropolitan areas like Montreal, Quebec City, Edmonton, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Background:
Since 2004, the City of Charlottetown has placed a priority on sport event attraction, aggressively pursuing the marketplace and seeing steady returns. The City launched its SCORE (Sport Charlottetown – Opportunities, Resources, and Expertise) initiative in 2005 to expand the lucrative sport tourism industry within the destination with much success, having been recognized nationally through Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance PRESTIGE Awards on five occasions for its outstanding efforts.
