Charlottetown Poised for Another Banner Year in Sport Event Hosting

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, February 11, 2016 – It’s only February but already the City of Charlottetown is poised to have another banner year in sport event hosting.

Charlottetown is playing host to several major sporting events such as the 2016 NBA All-Star Tour, the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge, the 2016 CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship, the Canada East Short Track Speed Skating Championships and the 2016 Quebec Major Junior Hockey Leagues Annual Session and Entry Draft – among many others.

In less than three weeks, the City’s Events Development Officer Wayne Long will attend the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance 2016 Sport Events Congress where it’s expected the ground work for securing new high-calibre events will be laid.

“Charlottetown has become a leader in Canada’s sport tourism industry, annually attracting a number of high profile regional, national and international sporting events through our award-winning sport tourism brand, SCORE,” said Mayor Lee. “Capitalizing on the sport tourism industry continues to be a priority because of the economic and cultural benefits, as well as the exposure for Charlottetown, showcasing all that our great city has to offer.”

The Sport Events Congress is the largest annual gathering of sport, tourism professionals and event management firms in Canada. It attracts about 400 delegates each year and includes a Sport Events Exchange, which is a business-to-business events marketplace where events rights holders have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with municipal representatives interested in hosting events in their communities.

“Sport tourism is Canada’s fastest growing tourism segment, accounting for more than $5.2 billion in annual spending,” said Wayne Long. “The City’s sport tourism brand SCORE is very active in the marketplace and our efforts are resulting in much prosperity in 2016.”
