SCORE! Selected As Finalist For National Award
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, March 22, 2013 – The City of Charlottetown’s sport tourism brand SCORE! has been selected as a top-three finalist for a Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) 2013 PRESTIGE Award (Program Recognizing Exceptional Sport Tourism Initiatives, Games and Events).
SCORE! was recognized under the CSTA Sport Tourism Organization of the Year category, which recognizes organizations or groups of individuals that have set a positive example for attracting visitors to a community for sporting events.
“Charlottetown is a leader in Canada’s sport tourism industry and has successfully attracted numerous high-profile regional, national and international sporting events through SCORE!,” said Mayor Clifford Lee. “Being named as a finalist for this prestigious national award speaks to how widely recognized and respected our sport tourism brand is. We are proud of all that has been achieved through SCORE!”
SCORE!, an initiative of the City of Charlottetown, was created in 2005 to grow the lucrative sport tourism industry within the Capital City. Managed by the City’s Events Development Officer, Wayne Long, SCORE! attracts and assists in the hosting of sport events in Charlottetown that offer a pronounced opportunity for economic, tourism and community growth.
Since its inception, SCORE! has become a national example of how sport tourism can have a positive impact on a community. It attracts events worth an average of $50-million annually to the provincial capital.
This year’s CSTA PRESTIGE Award nomination is the not the first time Charlottetown and SCORE!’s successes have been recognized by the CSTA. Charlottetown received the 2009 CSTA Sport Tourism Industry Builder of the Year Award and the 2011 CSTA Community Service Award.
The 2013 finalists and recipients will be honoured at the PRESTIGE Awards Luncheon on April 10 in Ottawa, ON.
